This quick and easy procedure prevents some cavities form starting. Sealants fill in deep pits and fissures (grooves) on your teeth that can be hard to clean. They help to prevent decay in those areas by preventing bacteria from getting in and making those areas easier to keep clean.

Some molar and premolar teeth have grooves that are too narrow and too deep for toothbrush bristles to access and scrub clean. Because bacteria is very tiny, it can get into those spaces and cause damage to the teeth. Cavities can start in the tiniest spaces.
Sealants are made with a flowable type of filling material that flows into those tight spaces, filling them up and creating a smooth surface. The tooth is cleaned and dried before the material is added. No drilling is needed. The sealant is cured with a special dental light and blends into the tooth so you don't even notice it's there.
The whole process only takes a few minutes and can save you a lot of pain and expensive treatment by preventing cavities from starting.
When kids get their first permanent molars, we can see if they are a good candidate for sealants at their dental hygiene appointment. For teeth that have active decay, you will need to see a dentist.
